The Fundamental Study About Zhangshuji In Tang Dynasty Military Prefecture

Zhangshuji was a very important civilian assistant, whose main functions and powers were dealing with work about writing, in the government office of Tang Dynasty military prefecture. From the study on Zhangshuji, we can learn more about Tang Dynasty military prefecture. This thesis consists of four parts.In the first part, the author expounds the evolution of Zhangshuji and points out that Zhangshuji was temporary in the early Tang Dynasty but later it gradually became fixed. In Northern Song, Zhangshuji no longer existed due to the end of Tang Dynasty military prefecture.In the second part, the author studies the personnel constitution of Zhangshuji. Zhangshuji were required to be good at calligraphy and writing memorial to the throne, so most of them came from intellectuals especially jinshi.In the third part, the author carries out researches into the transference of Zhangshuji, which included inner transference and outer transference. The former refers to transference to the higher level officials such as vice military governor in Tang Dynasty military prefecture. The latter comprises two kinds of conditions: transference to the central officials and transference to the local officials.In the fourth part, the relations between Zhangshuji and the imperial examination system are analysed. Because it is very difficult to enter the official career even they had passed the imperical examination, many people had to choose to be assistants in the government office of Tang Dynasty military prefecture. The corruption of the central bureaucratic system and the relatively flexibility of the use of personnel in Tang Dynasty military prefecture also led to people prefer to be officials of Tang Dynasty military prefecture, which reflects the rigidity of the central system of orgnization in the middle and late Tang Dynasty.
