This thesis mainly describes the meanings and usage of the affix "bian" and "mian" in modern Chinese. Comparing the using of "bian" and "mian" in modern Chinese, the author intends to find out the different meanings and different usage from each other.The thesis includes a preface, three main parts and a conclusion part.In preface, the author narrates the general usage of "bian" and "mian" in modern Chinese: combine with the substantive words; combine with the numeral words; combine with the orientation and location words.In part l,the author describes the meanings and usage of "bian" and "mian" that combine with the substantive words. The author thinks that there are two base meanings of "bian": edge of the substantive things; vicinity, there is one meanings of "mian": the plane part of a object.In part 2, the author describes the meanings and usage of "bian" and "mian" that combine with the numeral words. The author thinks that "bian" and "mian" has not only the meanings of "place" and "location" but also the meanings of orientation when combined with the numeral words. In part 3, the author describes the meanings and usage of "bian" and "mian" that combine with the orientation and location words, and thinks that the difference of "bian" and "mian" that combine with the orientation and location words is they have different use frequency in modern Chinese and different choice in orientation and location comparison object.At the end of the thesis, the author draws a conclusion that "bian" reflects "thread shape", "mian" reflects "plane shape". Associated with "thread shape" is length and narrow. Associated with "plane shape" is breadth and extent. As a result, "bian" and "mian" in modern Chinese have different meanings and different usage.
