| Conversation is one of the most commonly used languages in novels. We can know about the fictional world through the characters' direct speech because communication between fictional characters is the device used by the author to communicate with his readers. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze some important linguistic features of Conversation in Modern English Novels (CMEN). This paper aims at studying the lexical, discoursa' and stylistical features of CMEN as compared with those of Real Life Conversation (RLC) through computational methodAfter a series of computation facilitated by FOXPRO, pertinent data are obtained. It is concluded that CMEN is a specific register combining the characteristics of oral English and fictional English together. Due t( t ic oval medium of CMEN, there are lexical, discoursal and stylistical similarities between CMEN and RLC. On the other hand, lexical, discoursal and stylistical differences also exist between CMEN and RLC owing to the topic of CMEN as fictional English.
