During modern times, the high official Zhang Zhidong has his distinctive idea and practice in the Chinese great Anti-christian Campaign. This paper maintains that Zhang Zhidong's idea is dual, not only struggle side but also compromise one, changing with external environment, with general tendency from struggle to compromise. Around the China-France War, he mainly restricted the Christian power. In the nineties, he chiefly scotched the people's Anti-christian Campaign, and protect Christianity. During the Yihetuan Movement, he compromised with the missionary, and shared more in idea. Meanwhile, he did not completely cooperate with the foreigners. This tragedy resulted in the Chinese people humiliation and rivalry, reflected in Zhang Zhidong's idea in modern times.
