This paper discusses the contradictive situation between students' (non-English majors) poor performance in EFL (English as Foreign Language) listening and the higher demands in listening from CET-4. I am trying to give a introduction to an research which aims to contribute to the understanding of the students' different performance in listening by testing the hypothesis that, owing to differences in prior knowledge, the topic of a text is a significant factor with regard to students' performance in their EFL listening comprehension test. Then try to get some implications for listening teaching and learning.
