The data of this thesis come from the representative work of Chinese medieval language-Shi Shuo Xin Yu. Based on modern linguistic theories including text-linguistics and structural pragmatics, this thesis illustrates the manner of manifestation and expressive characteristics of Shi Shuo Xin Yu from the perspective of text-structural pragmatics hi detail with methodologies of investigation, statistics and analysis. By analyzing the formalizing composition, tracing back to the compiler's writing process and exploring its textual strategies, it summarizes ten types and two ways of topic realization and a great variety of topicalization manners in the pattern of theme-rheme progression and the hierarchical distribution of information. In this way, it discloses the compiler's simple but thought-provoking writing style and represents his neat and clear artistic characteristics. This thesis reflects main text-structural features of Chinese medieval language and illustrates the increasing perfection tendency of segment.This thesis is composed of three parts, that is, preface, main body and concluding remarks. The main body of this thesis first introduces the text-structural pragmatic analysis theory in general and then expounds the theme structure, thematic structure and information structure of Shi Shuo Xin Yu separately in detail with narration and discussion. This thesis aims to use the "tool" of modern linguistic theory to attack the "style" of Chinese medieval language so as to perfect the combination of theory and fact.
