With the development in foreign language teaching and research, it began to be realized that there are many factors that affect foreign language learning, such as teaching materials, teaching methodology, learning environment, etc. Among these factors the learner self is a significant one. Since 1970s, there has been a shift of emphasis in foreign language teaching and research from an almost single-minded concern with seeking for the best teaching method to the more concerns with the investigation of the learner. In this field, the language learning strategies( LLSs ) applied by the learner have attracted much attention of many researchers.For more than twenty years, a number of language researchers have made a lot of researches on LLSs in different aspects with various scientific research approaches. In the course of their researches, more attention has been paid to the investigations on the relationships between LLSs and learner's achievement in language learning and some findings have shown that there exists close relationships between them. However, for most of these researches were conducted outside China and most of their subjects were second language learners, it is still questionable that these research findings will hold truth in China where English is taught and learned as a foreign language. In view of the above situation, the present study, based on the findings of researches on the LLSs both in China and outside China, investigated the relationships between the LLSs and the performance on CET4 with the combination of the quantitative research and the qualitative research, attempting to provide some useful ideas in improving college English teaching and learning in China.The subjects in the present survey were the 500 non-English major sophomores in Lanzhou University. The survey, which was conducted mainly through interviews, questionnaires and reading students' diaries, haseventually found out that there are close relationships between the LLSs and the performance on CET4, that the LLSs can play a certain predictable role in achieving on CRT4. It has also thrown light on the differences between the high achievers and the low achievers in the application of the learning strategies. The findings of the present study are not entirely consistent with the findings of some prior researches, which makes it necessary to carry out a further investigation in this field.
