Postcolonial theories are one of the hottest topics in western academic world that has influenced the Chinese academy since the end of 1980's and immediately caused comprehensive attentions and discussions till now. This thesis first made a study and an analysis of postcolonial theories in the western context, and then summarized the process of how this theory spread through China. Further more, it analyzed how Chinese scholars used the theories to think and criticize and pointed out that deviation of postcolonial criticism in china was the result of the "Journey of Theories" that described by Edward ?W ?Said. Chinese scholars' attentions toward this theory are based on the social and cultural context of main land china in the 1990's. And the Chinese postcolonial criticism is not a mispronunciation of the western postcolonial theories, but a reconstruction made by the Chinese scholars who strived to adapt to the native context in new situation. The significance of postcolonial theories in china is that it has provided a new perspective for the Chinese scholars to rethink about those problems that have disturb them for a long time, such as the essences of Chinese traditions and culture(or oriental culture),the relationship between the Chinese and western cultures and the cultural radicalism in the "May 4th" movement. At last, the thesis explained the situations face by the Chinese postcolonial critics and indicated that the key point of Chinese postcolonial criticism lays on the probe of the alternative modernity in china and the development of new ethical culture. And it is the Chinese intellectuals' task to rewrite and enrich the theoretical system of the post-colonialism with Chinese11practical experience.
