Intelligence is a term being discussed frequently in second language learning. Whether intelligence affects language learning and whether language learning helps enhance intelligence are always under discussion. In some psychologists' views, intelligence is fixed and cannot be changed and has no relationship with language learning. But in the opinion of some others, intelligence can be changed and improved in better surroundings and there is a mutual influence between intelligence and language learning. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the relationship between college students' intelligence and college English learning and to suggest ways and approaches in college English teaching to help develop students' intellectual ability.The research paper centers on three parts: 1. What is the relationship between intelligence and college English learning? 2. What are the characteristics and problems of college students' intellectual development? 3. What remedial approaches can English teachers adopt to help enhance college students' intelligence?The thesis consists of six sections. Introduction provides a general introduction to the relationship between intelligence and language learning. Chapter One reviews the literature on the studies and theories of intelligence and describes the five basic components of intelligence. Chapter Two discusses the characteristics and problems of college students' intellectual development. Chapter Three discusses the meaning of intellectual development. Chapter Four illustrates the researches on the teaching methods and principles in college English teaching and their effects and reflections, and suggests the remedial approaches in college English teaching to help develop intelligence. The final section is conclusion, summarizing the studies and reflections in college English teaching.
