A Sociosemiotic Approach To The Translation Of Chinese Tourist Literature

More and more foreign tourists come to china to do business and travel. Accordingly, Chinese tourism is booming. As an effective way to publicize China and promote Chinese tourism, Tourist Literature becomes more and more important. The study of Tourist Literature is a new topic. New linguistic theories have been employed to study this special genre. In China, in recent years, scholars study the translation of Chinese Tourist Literature from different aspects, but few do it comprehensively and thoroughly. The current study uses sociosemiotic theory to study the C-E translation of Chinese Tourist Literature, which is a challenging try. The criterion of correspondence in meaning and similarity in function is established according to the sociosemiotics theory. Correspondence in meaning refers to the correspondence in designative meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning. Similarity in function mainly means correspondence in informative function, aesthetic function and vocative function. The author explains how to achieve Correspondence in Meaning and Similarity in Function in the translation of Chinese Tourist Literature on the level of word, sentence and text. Since translation is cultural communication in nature, a translator of Tourist Literature should have cross-cultural consciousness and know well about Chinese unique tourism cultures to eliminate barriers and achieve the communicative function of the source language by means of substitution, analogy, addition and reconstructuring. The author also classifies the problematic C-E translations in the translation of Chinese Tourist Literature into five groups and analyzes them with sociosemiotic approach.
