Humanitarianism, an ideological system in favor of human beings, was introduced from the Occident into China in the late 19th and early 20th century, thereafter it had been exceptionally involved in Chinese literature, culture and ideology throughout all the 20th century. However, more often than not, its characteristic of enlightenment had been overshadowed by the contemporary themes; therefore, all along with the humanization process of Chinese society, Chinese intellectuals of the 20th century had been suffering from a dilemma resulting from an urgent need for "enlightening people" and "safeguarding sovereignty". Of these intellectuals comes a peculiarexception -Laoshe. His humanitarianism ideology, developed naturallyand gradually, is characterized by a perfect combination of cultural enlightenment for "enlightening people" and nationalism consciousness for "safeguarding sovereignty". Instead of being.in a sharp conflict, they are either interacted or alternately standing out; they are two approaches to Laoshe' humanitarianism ideology. In the process, undoubtedly, his experiences of constantly changing from one identity under a certain circumstance to another contribute greatly to his profound cultural connation, which manifests itself by a complicated to a high degree favors a harmonious coexistence of cultural enlightenment and nationalism consciousness, hence a characteristic of moderate peculiar to his personal ideological system.
