Utterance Characters And Functions Of Appreciation Expressions And Comparative Study In English And Chinese

Speech act theory is one of the important parts of pragmatics. Appreciation act is an indispensable communication way in everybody's daily life. It contains varied forms of expressions., different strategies, distinct pragmatic functions. Comprehensive studying appreciation expression will offer us the basic foundation of explanation of certain aspects of polite principle scientifically and logically, and will push the development of language theory forward. In addition, the study of appreciation expression can give the influence to the study of polite principle directly. As for cross-cultural speech communication and foreign language learning, the study of appreciation has very important practical value.This paper deals with the appreciation expression via four aspects: 1. Description of the basic forms of appreciation expressions. We divide the appreciation expression into two groups on the basis of whether the expression has sign or not. 2. Analysis of the utterance characters in appreciation expressions. This part includes the following aspect: 1) The utterance characters in appreciation expressions in dialogues and monologues. 2) The language environment of the appreciation expressions and related behavior regulations. 3) The basic pragmatic function of the appreciation expressions and the reasons. 3. Analysis of the sentence structures of the appreciation expressions. 4. Comparative study of the appreciation expressions in English and Chinese.
