Critics name Hu Feng's literary theory as Experienced Realism, Mental Realism, Main-body Realism and so on. These names sound reasonable, but hard to touch the essence of modern literary theory .The paper re-examines Hu Feng's thoughts with the standpoint of modernity, which can eliminate the feeling views and help to see its essence clearly. And we can find the contributions of Hu Feng's literary theory and place it in the history of Chinese modern literature. There are three parts in the paper. The first part expounds the relation between Hu Feng's theory and modernity. Hu Feng's theory contains both enlightened and aesthetic modernity. It reflects enlightened modernity in the progressive consciousness of historicity, human-centered thinking and emotion. Hu Feng's theory embodies the othermodernity--aesthetic modernity, too. It uses the fibres of sense in the concept--subjective fighting spirit to break down the tie of reason which is placed in thecenter. So, it links the sense with the reason, and realizes aesthetic modernity which is characterized by life experience, compensates the lack of the literary theory of Left Wing. The second part expands the different modernities in Hu Feng's theory. Open to the worldwide literary theory is its spacial modernity, which is one of the reasons beyond the political ideology in Hu Feng's theory. On the theoretical level, the concepts of type and thinking in images show its scientific principle of literacy noumenon. On the aesthetics level, it shows the modern sublime-type aesthetics, and contributes to this literature creation. The last part deepens the above two parts. Human-centered aesthetics of Marxism and life aesthetics are the base of literary humanist ontology of Hu Feng's theory .This part compares Hu Feng's theory with Zhou Yang's and Mao Dun's literary theories to demonstrate the human-centered characteristics of Hu Feng's theory. I think it is the reason to make Hu Feng's theory stick to the aesthetic nature in literature.Modernity is developing continuously, the construction of which is unfinished process. So does the Hu Feng's literary theory. The unfinished modernity of Hu Feng'sliterary theory lies in two sides: the lack of inter-subjectivity in light of theoretical construction, incomplete development of modernism and life aesthetics. Even so, there is a tension between aesthetic modernity and enlightened modernity in it. Hu Feng's literary theory sticks to the aesthetic nature of literary creation and self-disciplinary nature of literary theory with the starting point of personal aesthetic consciousness. From the perspective of modernity to read Hu Feng's literary theory, we can get some enlightenment, find its inadequacy and further improve it. Hu Feng's literary theory is Chinese transitional literary theory in the 20th century. Its incomplete modernity is worth our further developing.
