In the early years of the twentieth century, western music swept China violently, bringing the history of ancient Chinese music to an end as well as setting modern professional music in immediate formation. Such a background encouraged the birth of Chinese professional music composition in the two decades from 1920s' to 1940s', and the music composers achieved in this period a lot by incorporating western traditions of harmonics into their music practice in the broad framework of calling for a. nationalized harmonics. Their contributions thus have great positive influence on the theoretical research of Chinese hormonics and the music composition of this period endowed people to follow with a large property theoretically and practically. The present .paper gives a full account of the music composing practice from simple imitating western harmonics to the-nationalization and gradual maturity of it. Conversely, the fundamental tones, the variety of chord structure, the peculiarity of tones and the evolutiojn of chord moving sequence are all combined to examine the gradual change of early Chinese professional music composition as western music of tradtional. functional chord basis spreaded over China. The reasons for such a change and related approaches in the process of western tradition being nationalized in China are further tentatively explored for an in-depth understanding of the following two points. On the one hand, the way turning to nationalized harmonics necessitates a good use of Chinese traditional music resources; on the other hand, the potential profundity of Chinese nationalized harmonics requires a careful study of western major and minor tones and its chord systems with practical techniques included.
