The Game Of Subversions--The Narrative Art On Hua Yu's Novels

When we talk about the art of literature, we have to face an old topic, that is the relation between literature and reality. Literature has to connect with reality. As a critic said, art cannot exist without reality; even we try to neglect its importance or emphasis on the creative talent of artists. The everyday life consists of lies for Hua Yu. He thinks that people need to face the truth of people's heart. And he tries to show the truth in his novel. In this paper, I try to do text analysis from his literature view.There are many papers about the narrative art of Hua Yu's novels. However those papers have concentrated on the pioneer aspects of his novels in 80's or the regression to tradition of his novels in 90's. I think it is not possible for an author to get rid of his early style. And Hua Yu himself also thinks he is one of the pioneers who are doing with innovation; since he think he is always trying to create some new things. I try to take Hua Yu's novels as a whole in discussing his narration art in this paper. And I put some emphasis on the meaning subversion and time subversion and the text characteristics based on these subversions. The subversion of meaning – Human give meaning to the world. While whenever the meaning has been settled down, that will drive people to omit the pursuing of meaning in other aspects. It will not only distort the objects but also restrict people's thinking. The novels of Hua Yu show us another view of the world, another meaning of the world, which is omitted by people.Body is the fundamental matter of human. There are many different taboos of bodies in classical culture, but for Hua Yu, body is just an object, which can be destroyed arbitrarily. People shouldn't put too much meaning on body like the emphasis of death. Death is just the final state of human, which doesn't have any specific characteristics. Smile can be the expression of death, while it can bring death at the same time. Actually, in Hua Yu's novels, life and death are in such a short distance that we cannot divide them into two parts. The tradition views of death don't exist in his novels, and the left is the basic living state of human.As it follows, the names disappear. Last name represents the honor of the family in China. And the first name is good wish from parents. However, without the meaning of death, names are not important. In Hua Yu's novels, names are nothing but signs, and with further understandings of the nonsense of world, people finally give up their names.The fundamental value and meaning of the human society have been suspected. The evaluations based on them are not stable any more. Normal and abnormal are just different views of one object. Imagination and reality cannot be distinguished. People show disorders of mental and the world is crazy.The subversion of time – The disappearance of common sense leads to no confidence in time. That is one framework of the world structure, whose change leads to a new look of the world.Hua Yu tries his best to show the disorder of time in his novels. Time can be reversed. Foretime, now and aftertime can all appear at the same time. Time comes to the depth of people's heart; all the time gaps are cancelled.The rhythm is more important compared with the reverse of time. People get sense of the outer world by their hearts. The one moment, which impressed in our memory, is more important than several common days and years. It can be said that one-day is longer than a century. The mental time is what matters.This understanding of time makes the novels different. The repeated emphasis of one period makes the place of traditional time senseful. And the readers get better understanding of characters' heart. Time also distorts the corresponding space.
