The development of writing competence is an important and difficult item in the English teaching process, because writing is a synthetic and complicated process of language utilization, and it is particularly difficult to be acquired for Chinese students as EFL learners. Most college students' compositions are not gratifying. The typical problems that existing in students' writing are varied, such as the basic linguistic knowledge is not sufficient, lacking the awareness of expressing in Chinese and English differently and adopting the mode of Chinese thinking to produce English writing. The adequate practice is badly needed to develop writing competence, especially to integrate writing with reading in order that students could acquire language knowledge and writing techniques effectively in the process of reading. We have emphasized that writing competence derives from large amounts of self-motivation reading, but neglected the important role of reading in the writing process and taught writing and reading separately. As a result, it is hard for students' to produce well-written compositions because they lack of background knowledge and perceptual materials, which are obtained from reading behavior. Writing and reading are two similar, dynamic, and interactive processes, both contain preexisting memory structure, both analyze the discourse structure and both involve the behavior of comprehension and creation. Writing actually is the process of imitating reading and reading is the behavior of imitating writing. The thesis illustrates the importance, feasibility and practicality of integrating writing with reading through discussing the nature of and the relationship between reading and writing, and the implication of reading-writing relationship for classroom activities. It suggests that the method of developing writing competence by integrating writing with reading is feasible in classroom in which the role of model essays are focused on and teacher gives necessary guidance. Therefore, the writing competence is enhanced through the reading process in which the students reinforce language knowledge; master writing skills and enrich background knowledge by analyzing the model essays, which varied in all styles and topics. The students would express their thoughts smoothly and produce coherent, fluent, extended pieces of writing.
