A Study Of The Meaning System Of Chinese English

This thesis studies the Chinese English (hereafter, CE) meaning. The authorholds that a system of Chinese English meaning exist in the Chinese English data.Upon this hypothesis, the author explores into such publications in English byChinese as newspapers, novels, dictionaries, internet articles and the like, andachieves the following results:1. Providing a working definition for Chinese English meaning as "those creativeusages that reflect the Chinese culture and language."2. Categorizing Chinese English meaning between Standard English (hereafterSTE) and Chinese English systems in terms of conceptual meaning, collocativemeaning and associative meaning, and within Chinese English system in terms ofsynonyms and antonyms.3. Working out five processes of Chinese English meaning: semantic extension,semantic shift, semantic transfer, semantic coinage and transliteration.4. Summarizing the features of Chinese English meaning: redundancy; calquing;collocation; number plus key word(s); reversals; make-up words; pinyin words; non-connective (paratactic) structures; subordinate-main structures; lazy, unclear and far-attached pronouns; images of Chinese culture.Thus, the thesis fulfills its purpose, namely, to unfold the landscape of ChineseEnglish meaning system, deepening such research in China. The significance of theabove findings is that it will invoke Chinese people's conformation to ChineseEnglish, shed light on the English teaching and dictionary-making in China and enrichthe research on non-native varieties of English worldwide.This study, nevertheless, has its own limitations. For example, it summarizeseleven features of Chinese English meaning but there might be some others. Thisgives a sense of where future research of Chinese English meaning is to go.
