"The Golden Lotus" honestly portrays the life and thought of those people living in the last period of feudalistic society in China. The author presented us a fine picture of their everyday life even including trifles with great interest, in this way, it gave fresh air to the novel circles of that time. "The Golden Lotus" is characteristic of opening up the characters 's whole life and thought to its readers, probing their mental world , and even revealing the qualities of people, good or bad, which helps us to differentiate it from other novels (such as "Tales of the Marshes", "the Adventures of MOM-KEY"), the latter paid much more attention to plot and story. This can explain why the people's inner world had been the focus and the major factor in characterization. This treatise gives a concrete analysis to the major characters' inner world and a discussion on how the author dicribed the mental world. The paper believes that "The Golden Lotus" reached an unprecedented achievement in psychological description in that Chinese feudalistic period, and therefore gave a breakthrough to the novel's narrative technique though revealing the characters' the inner world including their thoughts ,and creating many believable artistic characters.
