The early colonial Australia was mainly a male dominated country. Woman was acolonized sex double confined within the domain of household and society.Throughout the history, Australian women writers have been striving to write abouttheir own experiences.Miles Franklin and Christian Stead are two major figures in the literary history ofAustralia. Though different on surface, Miles Franklin's My Brilliant Career andChristina Stead's For Love Alone both explore women's experiences in differenthistorical times with emphasis on the role social and cultural forces played in forgingwomen's selfhoods.The two protagonists, Sybylla and Teresa both went on female odysseys, throughwhich they were in seek of their own independence and selfhoods. With the heroines'experiences, the two female authors were in a way to reconstruct their own youthfulexperiences and their works to a great extent reflect the real social circumstances inwhich women struggled to survive.This paper does an analysis of the two female protagonists' struggle to attainindividuality and freedom in order to render prominence to the intricate connectionbetween literature and social circumstances. Despite the dissimilarities on surface, akeen examination reveals surprising but sustaining overlapping patterns andexperiences.
