Deserted women are the motif of Chinese literature for a long time. Until now, there are a lot of descriptions about the deserted women. Though there are special innovatory descriptions about their images, the research about the deserted women were so scarce, there are still a lot to explore, So far, the academic circle are short of the works which delve in the deserted women comprehensively and systematically. On the basis of the present academic situation, the thesis attempted to expound the images of the deserted women in the period of "May 4th ", forties, eighties and nineties of 20th century objectively and carefully, aiming to reveal the their destinies, their different response to their lives and historical trajectory of the deserted women, reflecting their spiritual experiences and historical destinies of the modern Chinese women. The images of deserted women in the period of "May 4th" were divided into "the victims of the era" and "the trampled buds", the former were the old-styled wives deserted by their husbands who pursued the freedom of love affairs, the latter, deserted and played with by the men, were the modern women who pursued the freedom of marriage. Those women, whose lives were miserable because of the economic dependence on the men, were closely involved in the era wave of "temperament liberation" and "human liberation".Zhang Ai-ling and Su qing depicted three kinds of deserted women: "bird on the screen" "bird in the cage" and "moth struggling in dilemma". The former two kinds were, influenced by the consciousness of "original sin", bereft of "the consciousness of subject", the latter struggled in the dilemma between the professional and traditional women.Basically the women in the 1980's and 1990's have gained economic independence, yet the deep traditional cultural amassment can't enable them to break away with the awareness of attaching themselves to men. The other kind of women had the awareness of pursuing the spiritual independence, some of them, whose lives were blemished, keep their dignity through their rivalry with the men. The others, though being deserted, can still reestablish the harmonious relationship with the men, the emergency of those women marked the maturity of the mentality of Chinese women.
