Xia Wanchun belongs to the rare that is worthy to make a thorough research among the writers at the turn of Ming and Qing Dynasty. He although only lives 17 years old, he has precocious talent and intelligence and good name immortal. He and his works both take important places in the Chinese history and the literature history. But the research about Xia Wanchun is comparatively falling behind and skin-deep.This paper can be divided into four parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of the course of Xia Wanchun's life, including his childhood as a child prodigy, his grown-up as a person of ideals and integrity and the success as a lengendary figure in literature history, then describes the formation of his scholar-officials character in his transient life. The second chapter is about the representation of the times' features in Wanchun's literature works, shown in his thoughts and artistic style.Xia Wanchun's writings presented his aspiration of resisting the aggression and reviving Ming dynasty; his sorrow and grieveness at the sight of his country's decline; his praises and mourness for his teachers and friends who delicated their lives to the nation; his severe reprimand on the corrupt court administration. And the artistic style presented in his writings is the strong patriotism, abundant optimism, unyielding spirit and heroic sacrificing spirit. The third chapter makes tentative study of the causes for Xia Wanchun's early-maturing. That is, firstly, because of his family education, especially the affects of his father Xia Yunyi; secondly for the influence of his teachers and friends, including his teacher Chen Zilong, who laid emphasis on the spirit of writing and his friend Qian Xi, who attached importance to the integrity in works; thirdly because of the background of the times, in which dynastic changes occurred and the danger lurked on every side.
