Jia Pingwa, an important Chinese writer since 1980s,has published many works .Of all his works, undoubtedly novels play a significant role, which have had much influence domestically and have achieved great success internationally. Therefore, the study of Jia Pingwa's novels has great academic value and sense. In this thesis, I will try to analyse Jia Pingwa1 novels from a macro-view. In order to discuss his works at a deeper lever, I'd like to focus on the narrative individuality and qualities of Jia Pingwa1 works.This thesis consists of four sectors, describing the narrative qualities of Jia Pingwa1 works from different aspects.Firstly, Jia Pingwa's narrative attitude and aesthetic ideal are characterized by natural methods presented as concealing narrators, simplifying plot, writing stories by observing life and narrating details in most uncultivated way. This quality originated from the influence of thoughts such as Taoist aesthetics, ancient speaking art, secular novels in Ming and Qing dynasties and New Realism ranging from late 1980s to the early 1990s.Although Jia Pingwa's natural methods used in his novels have literary value and sense, they are accompanied by disadvantages and problems.Secondly, the school of Jia Pingwa's novels belong to imagism. But the presentation of imagism is only an important profile of his narrative characteristics. In his novels, Jia Pingwa created lots of images of nature, characters, stories, societies, cultures and folk traditions. These images have the following characteristics. The first one is that images within one work have different roles. Most of main images imply the meaning of metaphor and symbol. The second one is that from the past to the present, the images creation of Jia Pingwa's novels developed from partly to wholly. The third one is that creating images always comes into being symbols and symbolic images. Although images creation in his works is reasonable, it has also caused some problems in artistic field.Thirdly, JIa Pingwa's novels incline to mysticism because he has described different kinds of mysterious phenomena in his novels.
