The last few decades witnessed the rapid development of literary translation, but the branch of film translation has not gained deserved attention in translation circles. On the other hand, dubbed movies have gained increasing popularity among Chinese audience and the art of dubbing has developed into a special art in China. It seems paradoxical that there are still no relatively mature theories on film translation.A lot of famous translators, both at home and abroad, have summarized constructive opinions on film translation from their translation practice. This thesis, very tentatively, proposes to apply Nida's functional equivalence theory to movie translation. Here the author first analyses the possibility and necessity of the application of functional equivalence theory to movie translation, then has a detailed discussion on its application from different levels: linguistic level, socio-cultural level, aesthetic level and personalized language level, and at last, this thesis lists two remaining problems of the application of functional equivalence to movie translation for further discussion: the degrees of domesticating foreign cultures and the rate of possibility of the comparison between the response of the target audience and that of the source audience. In conclusion, this thesis points out that functional equivalence theory can provide a new sight in movie translation and help resolve a lot of difficult problems, however, it is not always applicable to movie translation. Making a satisfactory dubbed film needs effective cooperation among translators, directors and dubbing actors or actresses.
