Zhao Benshan is a famous sketch performing artist in our country. The humorous funny and witty language constitutes the brightest scenery in his sketches. This thesis intends to conduct a tentative research on the humor mechanism underlying in Zhao Benshan's sketches on different levels from different perspectives by exploiting the relevant linguistic theories — semantics, pragmatics, rhetoric, stylistics, and logics.Zhao Benshan's sketches are attractive, are popular with the large audience because his sketches possess many outstanding characteristics in language, in his excellent performing arts, in his unique physical gestures, in the lifelike and impressive roles he played ....In the thesis, only those with the humor tints are singled out and are given a close analysis instead of an overall but shallow one. The analysis tries to explore the underlying cause of the humor in Zhao Benshan's sketches, i.e. the humor mechanism. The central part of this thesis is the descriptive analysis of the sketch lines with humor tints only. It's a comprehensive and thorough application of the linguistics theories learned during the graduate period. It's a tentative application of the linguistics theories. In convenience of a thorough analysis, the thesis, in its first place, delimits the definition of "humor" in Zhao Benshan's sketches. With this delimitation as the premise, and with the theoretical support out of the linguistics theories and on the basis of one of the most influential humor theories — the incongruity theory, the analysis is carried out, by analyzing to find out the cause of humor in Zhao Benshan's sketches.
