This thesis focuses on the tragic of Tender Is the Night. And the research contains three parts, the strong individual will of the tragical character Dr. Dick Diver , the irreconcilable conflicts between Dick and the upper class , and Dick's acts of fighting .Through the analysis of the three symbols of the tragic, the thesis is to explain Dick's tragedy.The character of Dick is the typical tragical character. The positive factors in his character system drive him pursuing his ideal and dream .And under the pressure from the moral decline and the ugly humanness of the upper class , these factors are the motivity of his self-examination and fighting acts. On the other hand, those negative factors and his flaw in his character system lead him making wrong choices and his droop .And his enterprise of the American Dream manifests the magnificent spiritual lay of his ideal.In the Jazz Age, Dick is in the conflicts between the money worship , moral decline and the instinct desire of the upper class and his own will.
