Foreign language classroom is unique in that the language used in class is involved in two different ways: the organization and control of the classroom take place through language; language is also the actual subject matter that is being taught. Therefore how teachers modify their language will determine whether they can provide sufficient comprehensible input for learners and whether they can help learners elicit sufficient comprehensible output. In this paper the author reports a research on teacher talk with two objectives: to find what the characteristics of current teacher talk in College English class are and to investigate the influence of teacher talk on students'acquisition. There are five chapters in this thesis. The first chapter presents the definition and important functions of teacher talk. Also the significance of this paper is introduced in this chapter. The second chapter summarizes some influential theories in the field of second language acquisition and comes to the conclusion that comprehensible input, comprehensible output and interaction are the important elements in language acquisition. What's more, some instructive researches on teacher talk are reviewed in this chapter. The third chapter introduces objectives, methods, and subjects of this research.
