The works of Zhu Sujin cannot be ignored in researches on modern military novels. Readers and critics increasingly appreciate the aesthetics presented in his works. So to speak, it is the inner aesthetical attitudes towards war that highly distinguish his work. This paper aims to, from a collection of about ten novels and two proses, bring forward the life consciousness implied in the aesthetical attitudes towards war and further probe into the cultivation of soldiers and even human beings. The topic of war is an outdated "novelty", which varies personally.War can be roughly clarified into three levels: the first is concerned withpolitical utility, that is, judgement on war is closely related to benefits ofsome party or class, which, consequently, determine the kind of war, forinstance, whether it is just or unjust, aggressive or anti-aggressive; thesecond level involves humanitarianism.War is depicted from a humanistic perspective in which the good andbad are both evidently presented. Humanitarianism holds that war isstrongly condemned which brings nothing but disaster and death to humanbeings. So war on this level is often literarily animadverted; the third levelrelates to literary aesthetics in which war is a two-sided coin and also aconstant prolongation in human society. We should face with and furtheranalyze war in a positive and rational way, that is, to explore the aestheticsof war via the underlying relationship betweenwarfare and human beings.Sharply different from utilitarianism, aesthetical attitudes towards war avoid judgment on justice subjectively and transcend the partial anti-war views. On the contrary, the beauty of life and war are aesthetically envisaged and appreciated. Firstly, war is endowed with human attribute. War is a social outcome as long as humans came into being. It cannot be denied that the unavoidable war has brought with us numerous disasters. Human beings are, in fact, deeply war-conscious, which can be fully presented with behaviours like killing, struggle, conquest, innovation and hatred. Human beings are born with competition, which is vividly manifested in opponents in war, as well as in our routine life. Second, war also stands for the beauty of life. Hideous as war is, the priceless and immortal beauty in it is fully represented. War can inspire the potential intelligence and strength to its full extent. In war with the nature, humans have ameliorated living conditions better; in war among human beings, we further perfect the quality of life. Consequently, war can be much aesthetically valued. Last, the supreme war is for its own sake. Zhu sujin considers that war is not only a reflection of beauty and strength, but also an improvement of human life and characters. What Zhu emphasizes are not the reasons for which war breaks out but the function of war as a means by which value and beauty in life are realized. We can, along with war, define and appreciate the beauty in life, thus fully enjoy nicety and joviality. In other word, it is life itself not war that counts. Attitudes towards war can be defined as distinct, so are the charactersin Zhu Sujin's works. His viewpoints are that the persons, who behavebravely and radiate goodness, are spiritually nobles.First: Shaping of HeroesIt is evident in his works that characters of heroes change graduallyand present different traits in specific phases. Heroes can be characterizedas utilitarian, romantic and valorous models respectively. In the first phase, immaturity represents in his works as the obvious mainstreamcharacteristics involved. The role of soldiers is distinguished as utilitarianand dedicatory. In the second phase, the description of heroes changes fromthe topic of "man"to "life"and moreover to "exploration of life". Thecharacters in Zhu's works are impressed as both brave and resourceful, andsome sort of critical of the society. Typical personality as they have, heroescannot be vividly pictured without warfare experiences. In the third phase, consequently, heroes of distinct characters are thoroughly depicted and thebeauty in life involved is annotated with imagination.Seconed: Humanized EnemiesDescriptions of enemies are highlighted in Zhu's works. From aparticular perspective, enemies are aesthetically depicted. Counterpart asthe enemy is, it is also an important participator. We should not only respectbut also treat the enemy equally, the result of which is that war ishumanized as a competition and even an art. Beyond the surface levelconcerned with politics and social class, the author probes into somesimilarity between the two sides and even takes a positive view on theenemy unprecedentedly. Strength and beauty in war are to be represented as...
