Hemingway is one of the well-celebrated American writers, a remarkable stylist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature inl954. The code heroes in his works and his outstanding style have won him numerous readers. Similarly, he is very lucky in academia. Hemingway studies have attracted numerous critics and scholars in the past century. Articles and books about Hemingway have outnumbered the original works of Hemingway.In the past years much of the academic energy has been devoted to the research of Hemingway's novels and novella. In the meantime less academic energy has been spent on his short stories. In recent years his short stories have become a focus of academic study. As a result, there are more and more academic articles and books on Hemingway's short works. However, few people study Hemingway's short stories from the perspective of alienation.This thesis is a study of Hemingway's short stories from the angle of alienation. This author maintains that the alienation of man is a significant theme of many of Hemingway's short stories. This is closely connected with Hemingway's unique personal experience and the cultural background of his time.
