College English has been one of the most important courses in china's colleges and universities. With the reform and opening up and growing international exchange, the society has greater expectation of the English level of talents. Teacher is a crucial factor which can influence the quality of foreign language teaching, College English teacher will play an essential role in improving college English teaching. The study intends to make a survey on several factors, e.g. teacher's teaching concept, capability, knowledge, instruction method, teaching facilities, research awareness, research purpose, research environment, research method and research product by means of investigation, literature method and interview with college English teachers in Chongqing as objects of the study. In the study, problems existing will be analyzed and proposals produced in an attempt to promote the development of English teachers and college English teaching.This dissertation involves five parts.Part1 presents the problems and introduces the reason and significance of the research.Part2 dwells on the investigation of teachers in college English teaching and research in Chongqing. 111 English teachers in 8 colleges and universities in Chongqing are surveyed to have some understanding of college English teachers in teaching and research in Chongqing.In part3, problems are pointed out and causes are analyzed. The English teacher's lack of knowledge about condition, weak capability for reflection on teaching and research, comparatively low ability of research are studied and causes are analyzed from the perspective of pre-vocation, post-vocation training, teacher's concept and objective condition.Part 4 attempts to come up with proposals and suggestions. Firstly, better teacher's knowledge structure. Secondly, improve teacher's capability for reflection on teaching and research. Finally, enhance teacher's competence to conduct research.Part 5 concludes the dissertation and direct attention to areas for further study.
