In a specific context, the polite language must be appropriate in essence, while the appropriate language must be polite in form? Concentrating on the two issues, from the two perspectives of language and culture, this thesis applies British famous linguists Brown and Levinson's politeness theory to making a research on the linguistic politeness in Hotel English Alive.First of all, from five perspectives, this thesis makes a tentative exploration into the universal politeness phenomena in Hotel English Alive. Then, taking the politeness theory as a standpoint, this thesis carries out a comparative analysis in the form of case studies of the linguistic politeness in Hotel English Alive. From the perspective of value orientations, this thesis analyzes directness or indirectness strategies in expressions, so as to reveal the term politeness with different connotations in a specific context and in different cultural societies, and therefore on the basis of these analyses, this thesis puts forward an applicable linguistic politeness model, by means of which, in the process of providing good services for guests, the employees can be supplied with manipulative theoretical guidelines.The first breakthrough of this thesis lies in applying the politeness theory to the hotel practice. Second, the politeness theory plays a leading role in making a research on speech acts in Hotel English Alive, but this theory still has some limitations, for example, it lacks discussion on appropriatility. Third, in the process of studies, this thesis finds that politeness is sometimes in contradiction with appropriateness in HEA. For this reason, the author of the thesis highly values the perfect combination of the two, that is, appropriatility of politeness, which may not only realize a hotel's real goal of providing good services for guests, but also can achieve optimal communicative effects. And meanwhile, by means of the platform of appropriatility of politeness, a hotel, especially a foreign hotel concerned in the thesis, is able to provide guests, especially foreign guests, with first-class services. Therefore, it furthers the whole hotel industry in China to catch up with and surpass the world's advanced levels.
