Studying The Aesthetic Features Of Zhang Guruo's Translation Of Tess Of The D' Urbervilles

Thomas Hardy, a great novelist in English literature, established his unique writing style. He vividly presents the fate of characters and the internal emotional changes of protagonists through the description of natural scenery. He delicately melts the beauty of music and the beauty of painting into his writing, which endows his work with strong aesthetic features. Tess of the d'Urbervilles, as one of the representative works of Hardy, exquisitely presents Hardy's artistic achievement in his novel writing. Zhang Guruo, one of the greatest literary translators in China, represents the aesthetic features of Tess of the d'Urbervilles of Hardy truly and artistically both in forms and in contents. In forms, on the one hand, he conveys the beauty of source language by means of onomatopoeia, imitation in shape, duplication etc. On the other hand, he tries to represent the beauty of painting reflected in source language by exploiting the variation in sentence structures. In contents, he not only preserves the rhetoric features of the original, but also conveys the beauty of "Yi Jing" and image as well as the register features of source language exquisitely and perfectly with idiomatic target language. Therefore, among the translated versions, the one translated by Zhang Guruo becomes eminent and he is regarded as the oriental bosom friend of Hardy. In this thesis, I will study the aesthetic features of Zhang Guruo's translation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
