A Study On The Hedging Strategies Of Chinese

There are some deficiencies in the study on hedges till now. They are mainly that the classification of the hedges, the nature determination of the Approximators and the lack of strategic usage of the hedges.This paper finds that there is a kind of hedges whose characteristics are different from those of both the Approximators and the Shields, so a new type of classification should be set up. The usage of all the hedges involves both literal meaning and non-literal meaning, and all kinds of the hedges can be used untruthfully, namely, pragmatic strategy usage, as a means of expressing the speaker's certain intention. Therefore it is not appropriate to range the Approximators absolutely in the study of semantics. The study of the Hedging Strategies has not aroused enough recognition, which can make the study of the hedges more comprehensive.This paper has mainly studied the Hedging Strategies of Chinese and has defined the Hedging Strategies as communicating means of using hedges intentionally to achieve certain purposes. We have analyzed the real usages of every kind of the Hedging Strategies followed by a lot of descriptions. Their functions are mainly putting-off or lightening the utterance or fact responsibilities of the speaker besides saving the faces of the speaker and the hearer separately or both of them, and also that of the third person. This study finds that the Hedging Strategies are used quite often in the daily life and that the effects are distinct.
