The Carnivalization And The Rite Of Decrowning

This thesis discussed the problem of carnival poetics in the works of Milan Kundera, who was born in Cezchic and lives in France. Milan Kundera is a famous foreign writer familiar to Chinese reader. But at the same time,he is the author who has been disputed for long time. This thesis mainly attempts to analyse the texts of Milan Kundera's novelswith the carnival theory of Bakhtin,and reviews the characteristics of carnival rite,carnival thoughts and civil homour culture and the relationship with polyphonic form in novel. It explains the significance of cultural poetics in carnival spirits on content, style and form of the novels. The thesis is made of five parts: The introductory part intriduces the general significance of Milan Kundera's works, his life, his main works, and the acceptance degree of his works in the world. It also offers the thesis's whole projection that interpreting the significance of the works by carnival theory of Bakhtin. Part one : It explains the carnival rites of Milan Kundera in the view of historical poetics. In diachronic and synchronous historic coordination, we can find the history of carnival development. And then it analyses the carnival rites of Kundera's works and their meaning. Part two:It analyses Milan Kundera's novel from the viewpoint of the poetics of novels. And it explains the characteristics of texts'carnival thought and carnival spirits in detail. Part three: On the base of the former two parts, it criticizes Kundera's novels by the viewpoint of cultural poetics, and studies the implication of the rite of carnival and the decrowning.By the end of the part,it summarizes Kundera's spirits of novel and innovational thought. The last part is the summary of main points in this thesis. It points out that the combination of the carnival theory of Bakhtin and Kundera's works brings deeper poetic implication. The conclusion of the thesis as follow: 1)Milan Kundera's works inherited the traditional characters of European carnival, which are exhibited in his novels content,construction and thought; 2) Milan Kundera's carnival novels contain various styles. It makes the style of novels open and communicative. Therefore, these styles,spirits and dialogues in his novel can intercommunicate with each other freely; 3)Milan Kundera's novels contain the carnival spirits of equality and jouissance. The carnival spirits rooted in the tradition of civil homour , and overthrow the status of canonical literature.
