EST is an independent variety of English. It came into being and developed accompanying the appearance and development of science and technology. It gradually draws the attention from the domains of science and linguistics. It is a scientific and technological register formed by scientists and technicians to meet the needs of scientific communication. It is a language used by the scientists and technicians in a special situation. EST, as a major sub-division of, cannot be understood and analysed without ESP. This paper is to discover the intrinsic characteristics of EST, so the features of EST vocabulary, syntax and discourse analysis are separately studied and explored in a deep sense. This paper is divided into six parts. Chapter One is survey of EST and brief introduction of ESP. It's obvious that ESP plays an important part for us to have an exact and all-sided understanding of EST.Chapter Two is about science and technology. The definition is given and the general nature of EST is interpreted and analyzed. The next three chapters are the details for the study of EST. Chapter Three is concerned with the lexical features of EST, in which the type and formation of EST vocabulary are studied. Chapter Four involves the syntactic characteristics of EST, which shows the unique syntactic characteristics in EST. Chapter Fivestudies EST discourse analysis, in which a systematic analysis of EST discourse is made. It is through the study of the EST details that the intrinsic characteristics of EST can be discovered. Naturally, Chapter Six draws the conclusion.
