The thesis mainly discusses the main heroine Dorothea Brooke's marriage choice inMiddlemarch written by George Eliot. First, the thesis mentions that whether Dorothea'schoice is wise or not in her two marriages is not important, in this article, the focus is whyDorothea chooses Casaubon as her first husband, and after the failure of her first marriage, she despites the disapproval which comes from society, friends, even relatives, choosingLadislaw as her second husband. The author does not use many words to describe theheroine's psychological movements, however, there must be something hidden in Dorothea'smind which is difficult to know. Through the heroine's dialogue and her detailed actionsdescribed in the novel, the conflict of her impulses, desires, and values are shown clearly.According to the changing process, the thesis argues that Jung's complex theory canexplain Dorothea's choice in her marriage. The theory of complex is Jung's most importantcontribution to psychological analysis. In Middlemarch, Dorothea's choice is influenced byher complexes more or less, which impulses her to make her decision no matter whether shegets a happy ending or not. This article discusses the issue in four parts: Dorothea'scomplexes and her first marriage, the disillusionment of her first marriage, Dorothea's newcomplexes and her second marriage, her moral desire and her second marriage. And fromthose points, the readers can get a clear understanding about Dorothea's marriage choice.
