In recent years, lexical knowledge has received expanding scholarly attention in a number of monographs and collections of essays. The overall frame of the present work is first of all to review the prior research on lexical knowledge to draft a picture of this linguistic phenomenon with its definitions and elements. Then, by applying vocabulary-learning strategies to foreign language vocabulary teaching and learning especially to postgraduates'teaching in China through a case study, we can promote postgraduates'lexical knowledge. Included in this thesis are four chapters. Chapter One opens with an introduction to lexical knowledge. In this part, the author sketches three approaches to study the definitions of a word, two pairs of concepts in lexical knowledge and some problems on students'lexical knowledge. The three approaches are word-centered research, the research based on dimension concept and the learner-centered research. In this thesis, lexical knowledge can be divided into two parts, which are word knowledge and the application of word knowledge. Breadth and depth consist the first part; receptive knowledge and productive knowledge makes up the other. Then the author discusses students'problems on word knowledge and the application of word knowledge individually in order. In Chapter Two, the basic configuration of vocabulary learning strategies is recounted by describing its definitions, categories. Then a case study conducted by the author is presented in Chapter Three, elucidating the current situation of Chinese non-English major postgraduates'lexical knowledge as well as their vocabulary learning strategies. Based on the detailed accounts of the above sections, the last chapter ends with the conclusion by instructing and regulating postgraduates vocabulary learning strategies to help them to form successful and efficient vocabulary learning strategies, and improve their lexical knowledge in the end.
