As a language phenomenon, the "v+adv" construction still keeps alive in such surroundings that new words have been springing up like mushrooms, there must be some theoretical and practical grounds. After reviewing the literature of these constructions, we start the research with the analysis of reasons for their wide utilization and comprehension, and analyze the functions of their components for the semantic meanings. By using the semantic feature theory, conceptual metaphor theory and conceptual blending theory, the thesis studies and explores the "v+adv" construction and carries out a qualitative research focused on the verb construction, which consists of a verb and an adverb. The thesis mainly involves the following aspects:1. The study of interactive mechanisms and collocational restrictions of the components in the "v+adv" construction in terms of semantic feature theory.2. The analysis of the function of the adverb for the meaning generation of the "v+adv" construction.3. The understanding of the "v+adv" construction from the perspective of cognitive semantics. In the course of the research on the "v+adv" construction, by reviewing the literature we have in hand and some exploration of the "v+adv" construction, from a cognitive semantic perspective, we make a further understanding of some common spatial adverbs that are widely used. From the analysis of some language data, we have drawn the following conclusions:1. Collocation of the verb and the adverb in the construction is not arbitrary. In fact, there exist strict collocational restrictions. The collocational restrictions are demonstrated from two aspects: lexicaldetermination and grammatical restrictions. When the semantic features of the adverb and the root verb are compatible with each other, the two can be combined to generate new meanings . The semantic potential of the verb plays a decisive role in the selection of the adverb. In reverse order, the adverb alters, to some extent, the semantic meaning of the root verb.2. There are some differences between the "v+adv" construction and the single verb. On the one hand, the adverb changes the meaning of the verb; on the other hand, when the "v+adv" construction is replaced with a single verb, they differ syntactically, semantically and pragmatically. And the semantic features of the adverb and human cognition cause these differences.3. The semantics of "v+adv" construction is not the simple adding up of its two components. In most cases, the two components are combined together to generate new meanings, which are quite different from its individual meaning of each component. The meaning change is motivated instead of being arbitrary. Conceptual structure, metaphor, image schema and conventional knowledge are foundations of understanding the meaning of "v+adv" constructions. Spatial adverbs mostly have the core meaning of spatial cognitive domain. When their spatial conceptions are metaphorically mapped onto other cognitive domains, they yield some other abstract meanings. The meaning generation of spatial adverbs in "v+adv" constructions is not arbitrary. Instead, there exist some links between different senses of the word. These links are based on human experience and basic cognitive models, such as image schemas.4. The adverb-centered method can facilitate the learning of the "v+adv" construction and there exist the feasibilities of this methodology for comprehending and mastering the "v+adv" construction. It is helpful...
