Western Europe was one of areas that Christianity was adequately developed. Monastery had its own religious institutions and systems. It played an important role that other organizations could not do. As a result, reviewing the function of monastery in western European society, which not only made us deeply understand monastery but also helped us comprehend the characteristics of times and society of western Europe in the middle Age. Except for the preface and epilogue, the whole thesis was divided into four parts to discuss.The preface discussed the research aim and meaning of this thesis and introduced the domestic and international general research on this subject in these few years.The first part explained the history of monastery. Monastic life was originated from Egypt, but it popularized and developed in western European Continent. Benedict, who finally made monastery become standardization, instituted Benedict rule, which inaugurated managerial mode of Christian church.The second part mainly expounded functions which monastery revitalized and developed in western European economics. Agricultural development and handicraft industry management and the revival of commerce of monastery had far-reaching effect on the life of all classes in western society in the early Middle Ages.The third part mainly expounded that monastery played a role in political life.
