The paper focuses on the female consciousness of the celebrated novel Song of Solomon, written by Toni Morrison, a famous female American black novelist. It consists of four parts:In introduction, it surveys the researches of the Song of Solomon by Chinese and foreign scholars, and points out the major problems in these researches. By analyzing these problems, we bring out the issue and its theoretical foundation: the discussion of the Morison's ethnic and female consciousness embodied in Song of Solomon, in which combines the theory of black feminist. The first chapter discusses the overthrow of the black male's status in the novel. All of the black men in this novel can be divided into three types: vengeance by violence, assimilation by whites and escape by flight. We point out that Morrison denies the way that the black men choose. The second chapter analyzes the black women in the novel, and points out that Milkman can not grow up without the concern of the women around him. By discussing the misfortune of the women around the protagonist Milkman, who are the women of Macon's and Milkman's lover Hagar, we disclose the tragic fate of black women under the double pressure of the white men and the black men, and moreover, we denote that the tragic rootstock is due to these black women's short of the ethnic and female consciousness. The third chapter anatomizes the image of Pilate, who is the actual protagonist of the novel, the guider of Milkman and also full of the supernatural magic color. She is a woman who is not only a prophet but also an ideal, independent and brave woman in Morison's mind. She can fly without leaving the ground, being different from the flying black man. And Pilate is the true dramatic protagonist of the novel. The forth chapter analyses the cultural dilemma which Morrison as a black female writer faces. She uses the double writing strategy in Song of Solomon to make herself join the mainstream of literary circle. We analyze the relationship between the novel and western classics, such as the Bible, Greece mythology and Bildungroman, and point out that in this novel Morrison rewrites, transforms and displaces western classics by black culture. The conclusion is that Song of Solomon is a masterpiece which embodies Morrison's unique female and ethnic consciousness.
