Zora Neale Hurston is a great novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist in America. Zora Neale Hurston is the prototypical female writer on black culture from the Harlem Renaissance. Their Eyes Were Watching God is her masterpiece. In this novel she created a female character who tried to find her own identity in the white and male dominated society. The novel is full of symbols and images. The thesis focuses on the analysis of these symbols in order to illustrate how Zora Neale Hurston makes the protagonist Janie get rid of the oppression of the male and the white. First in this thesis is included a brief introduction to the writer and the novel. Afterwards it examines the process of Janie's searching for identity through her vision and voice which are critical to the identity of black female in the black culture. A conclusion can be drawn that the portrait of Janie Crawford by Zora Neale Hurston has great influence on the latter female writer and also other black females who are struggling to find their identities.
