Tess of the D'urbervilles and Jude the Obscure are Hardy's last two novels which are considered the most excellent of his works. This dissertation attempts to apply Ecocriticism to studying these two masterpieces in order to probe into Hardy's modernity from a fresh perspective. The two works display the deep-felt concern about natural system. First, in poetic languages inherited from traditional romanticism, Hardy offered continual descriptions of nature. Second, symbolism is used for landscape description. Third, sympathy with animals is shown.Besides, libido is shown boldly and vividly in these two books, which overturns the Victorian outmoded conventions and customs. And the depiction of protagonists in both novels also could be considered clash between nature and civilization.
