The formal category of Chinese literature and art,which appeared about one hundred years ago,is not only applied extensively,but also has many ambiguties as well.With the aim to use the basic category of literature and art clearly in the future,this article mainly explores it on the following aspects.First,basing upon the context of Chinese literature and art,we study the formal category synchronicly,mamely,we have a semantic analysis of the foumal category.There are mainly three kinds of usage:(1)the appearance,shape,type.(2)the inner organization,arrangement,stucture and skills.(3)the entire or independent means connected with the style and the aesthetics .These three parts,each of which is partly reasonable,connect with each other.The first two kinds embody more inner producticity of the formal category.The last one is more influenced by the foreign documents.Second,basing on the context of Chinese literature and art,we study the formal category diachronrcly,that is to say.we arrange the general situation about the acceptance,the statement and the application of the formal category in the recent one hundred years.We focus on the sataements and applications about the formal category in the famous works,and the general or self-edited literature theoritical textbooks. At the same time,we insert the relevant research achievements of the foreign documents,which shows our absorption and utilization to the foreign achievements.Xiang Peiliang's statements about the formal category before liberation,and Tong Qingbing and Zhouxian's statements in the 1990s marked the height of formal category from the liberation to now.Third,the formal category was always a vassal of the content category during the thirty years after liberation.lt was considered as a tool even in the dialecical discussion of the relationship between the two.The obvious reasons are :the powerful tradition of "conveying the truth"and "expressing ideas" in the ancient Chinese documents,the historical situation and the political influence which enlightened it,There are three reasons when we trace the theoritical source.One is the sense of literature single from the theory of reflection.Another one is the misunderstanding to Hegel's esthetics, the last one is the mechanical application of Mao Zedong's controdiction. However,the relationship between the content and form is not that one part dominates the other. It can be understood clearly when the concept "subject and matter" is introduced as a medium.Forth,it is necessary to definite the usage of formalism.First of all,we should distinguish the formalism used as a way of creation and the formalism used as a way of research.The last one can be given no cause for much criticism.And then,the formalism which is used as a way of creation is not suitable to be used to critize a certain article or writer,but it van be used to criticize the style of writing during some age.
