The present study focuses on how the expertise affects 2D pattern recognition based on both behavioral experiments and fMRI. The possibility of configural process as a general rule in visual pattern recognition for perceptional experts was also discussed. The study not only extended the understanding about perception expertise to 2D patterns, but also offered evidences to support the opinion that the FFA, which locates in the middle fusiform gyrus and postulated as face special, had been not special at all but commonly involved in configural process. The results show: first, there was an "inverted effect" , which had been considerated as a phenomenon related to the expertise, in 2D letter-patterns recognition just as observed in 3D object recognition in superiorstudies; second, the FFA activation was correlated to expertise about 2D patterns recognition, and it was significantly stronger associated with experts. As the conclusion, the results support the theory of expertise. The "speciality" of face recognition is only a special example of expertskill----expert applies holistic, configural code about perceptionalinformation. This skill is general, and can be applied to both in 3Dpattern recognition and 2D' s.
