Communication strategies are important in helping second language learners and foreign language learners to communicate successfully. Communication strategies refer to the means employed by the language learners to overcome communication breakdowns due to their insufficient language resources. There has been a growing concern on the study of communication strategies in foreign language teaching and learning. This paper is intended to focus on the issue of teaching adult oral English with the textbook containing communication strategies. In this paper, the definitions of communication strategies, the development and classification of communication strategies were reviewed. In this paper the teaching of communication strategies was supported, though there is a controversy in teaching communication strategies. The paper studied how the communication strategies in the textbook matched with the communication strategies used by adult students before they had the oral English course. Data collected from the textbook and adult students were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It was found that communication strategies used by students were different when measured with the different tasks, and communication strategies used by students were quite different from those introduced by the textbook. Also it was found that communication strategies in the textbook appeared quite differently, scattered distribution in each unit and each practice item. The most frequently used communication strategy by students was "Pausing" of "Modification Devices", "Self-repair" of "Modification Devices" next to it. The most frequently used communication strategy from the textbook was "Non-verbals" of "Interactive Strategy", "Borrowing" of "Achievement Strategy" next to it.
