The present thesis tries to describe economic influences on the status of English and French in the contemporary age. It is pointed out that economy is one of the most important factors in the sociolinguistic development of English and French. The economic reasons in economic colonization and modernization make English become the first language and French the second language in terms of international influence. The trend is becoming obvious that English and French are gaining more strength in the world due to the recent development of the global economy. American economy, economic globalization and e-commerce are three significant factors of the present world economy for English to be a global language and the first international language. American economy is the key reason to ensure the unrivaled presence of English among other languages;economic globalization is a strong factor in economy to speed up the expansion of English;and e-commerce is a new means for English to be spread over the globe. French economy, economic cooperation of France with other countries and economic input into the French language are three contributive factors to make French an important language, whose status is second after English in the world. The relatively strong economy of France ensures a significant position of French in the international sphere;the economic cooperation of France with other francophone and non-francophone nations fosters the spread of French over the world;and the economic input into French proves to be an effective way to accelerate the linguistic development of the French language. Finally, the paper comes to the conclusion that economic development is the decisive impetus to establish the position of a language on the globe.
