Romantic period witnessed the mature of violin arts not only technically but musically. Violin literature of this period serve as excellent materials for violinists' technical training as well as a pathway for understanding the twentieth century music. As to major works of this period, say, violin concertos, the importance is obvious. The study of violin concertos of this period is necessary for that they are accepted as criteria for the development of violin students' performance from focusing on technique to music. This thesis is a performing arts study of Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major by Tchaikovsky and is a further step of Romantic violin concertos' study after my research on violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms in the last two years.As a piece of the composer's mature period, Concerto for violin and orchestra in D Major is the only violin concerto of Tchaikovsky as well. It contains rich violin musical language. The first chapter provides an analysis of every movements of the work from aspects of structures, themes, melodies, rhythmic patterns and musical content, combined with an explanation of compositional background and composer's original idea. The second chapter is a practical conclusion drew. A performance analysis on both articulation and structure is presented with demonstrations by the author's own practical experience. In consideration of the development of science and technology and the increase in the amount of various versions of CDs, a comparison of two selected recordings is made in the third chapter. The comparison is on tempo, dynamic contrast and etc. Based on the conclusion, the author extended the research to the two performers' backgrounds, gender and school differences.Through three chapters, the article makes a detailed and deep study of this violin concerto. The research is not only for a deeper understanding of the piece but for theoretic also practical experience and research on the trait of music language of violin and art conformation; general system and special conducting way of expression technique.
