Nonverbal communication is an absolutely indispensable ingredient of communication system. The description of nonverbal communication in the literary works is likewise an indispensable part of context. For the translator, the nonverbal communication presented is not here-and-now, but description of nonverbal communication. On the surface the translation of description of nonverbal communication is translating the source written text into the target written text. Substantively, it is transference between two different nonverbal language systems. This thesis comprehensively introduces the importance, classification and functions of nonverbal communication and description of nonverbal communication. Two problems on translation of description of nonverbal communication are probed into: being lack of the awareness of cultural messages included in the description of nonverbal communication contextually; neglecting functions of nonverbal communication in the context. In this thesis, a new perspective studying translation of description of nonverbal communication is proposed, this is, functional equivalence. Functional equivalence is applied for examining the strategies and procedures. Many examples are presented under each translating procedure to illustrate priority of applying functional equivalence in translating description of nonverbal communication.Chapter I serves as an introduction to purpose and layout of the dissertation. In this chapter II, the concepts, function, classification, features and cultural factors of nonverbal communication are discussed, and the description of nonverbal communication will be introduced and defined. Chapter II deals with some problems about translation of description of nonverbal communication and literature review of this study. Chapter III mainly concerns problem of equivalence in nonverbal communication translation and the theory of functional equivalence. Functional equivalence is considered as the primary goal in translation. Its priority of application will be demonstrated. In Chapter IV,strategies of translating will be discussed. Some specific procedures will also be probed into. Chapter V serves as the conclusion of this dissertation.
