"The idea of Europe"is the identity of all the European for their commonness, and it convers the identity in the geographical cognizance of all the European and European history culture. The origin of the ideas of Europe in 12th,13thcentury coincides with Hegel's philosophic idea on the world history, as the same as which the subjective thesis is exactly that the European thoughts on"what is Europe",and the objective thesis is that the impacts on Europe from the culture of non-Europe; and the new thesis deduced from the above two theses is the form of"European identity", which is the lineage result thesis——the impacts of"the culture of non-europe"and cognizance of European themselves. In sight of this, we can understand the form of"idea of Europe". In the 12,13th century, as the heritage of the Classical culture,"the ideas of Europe"remains its spirit in some degree. And in the High Medieval Age, a group of population first used'Christianity'as a ecumenical spirit to identify themselves within their'Europe'and to distinguish with others. What's more, the interaction with the outer world, the other cultural world of Byzantium and Islamism, to make the'Europe'becoming a cultural symbol of anthorpology——Christendom.The paper is divided into five chapters with the introduction giving a detailed analysis of the definition and spiritual connotation of"the idea of Europe".The first chapter focuses on the analysis of the"the idea of Europe"of the classical age and the middle ages. It first sets out to explain the term"Europe"in terms of etymology and geography and then tries to expatiate the"the idea of Europe"of the Roman Empire.The second chapter is concerned with how the transmitter of subject, Christendom, essential to the occurrence of"the idea of Europe"was established.The third chapter concentrates on the illustration of the influence of the other factors which are essential to the appearance of"the idea of Europe". These factors mainly dwell on Islamic world and Byzantine Empire.The fourth chapter talks about how was displayed in the twelve and thirteen century and gives a detailed account of the time connotation of"the idea of Europe".The fifth chapter is the conclusion which summarizes the"the idea of Europe"of the 12th and 13th century and briefly discusses its influence on the neoteric Europe.
