The last twenty years have seen tremendous changes in the field of language teaching and learning. The major one is the shift of the focus from the teacher to the learner. A good many approaches, therefore, come into horizon advocating the learner-centered way of teaching. Learner autonomy has gained its momentum in such a situation. Although learners occupy a predominant position in the context of learner autonomy, teachers, on the other hand, exert no less influence on this process. The teacher as a significant figure in the teaching and learning process will definitely affect learner autonomy in a considerable way. Therefore, the research on the impact of teachers'role on learner autonomy should not be neglected. This thesis aims to probe at whether the current teachers'role facilitates learner autonomy of college non-English majors and how the role of the teacher affects learner autonomy of college non-English majors. Through a questionnaire investigation, the findings inform us that currently teachers'role of being an authority does not help to facilitate the development of leaner autonomy. Besides, teachers'role impacts on leaner autonomy through three dimensions: cognitive dimension, social dimension and psychological dimension. The impact on cognitive dimension can be further elaborated from metacognitive aspect concerning planning, monitoring and evaluation, and cognitive aspect referring to the direct strategies or skills of processing the specific tasks. The impact on social dimension lies in that it affects the social competence such as asking questions and cooperating with others, etc. The impact of teachers'role on psychological dimension is revealed from their influence on various psychological states of learners.
