The historical essays of the three Sus represent their pronounced colors by being fond of quoting copiously from many sources, especially largely citing classical allusions to enforce the power of their arguments. They review directly on lots of historical figures and stories of the past dynasties, or resort to historical facts to advise, to criticize the current politics, or to express their feelings and thoughts. The length of their historical essays vary greatly, some of them are voluminous to thousands of words and in a flow of eloquence, which can rouse the deaf and awaken the unhearing; some of them are so short that only have few tens of words, which seems to sketch randomly but full of interests. Between the lines of these historical essays, we can have their general viewpoints about history. It embodies their advanced ideas of social history, of righteousness and benefit, of talents both with ability and political integrity and shows the different characteristics from those of the historical essays of Sima Guang and others. The historical essays of Three Sus though share some features in common but still differ from each other by their own personalities respectively, and they have great and deep influence to the disciples of the Three Sus.
